A valve can fit the manifold perfectly and still give a machine the wrong neutral behavior. Start with the connections shown inside the center box of the hydraulic symbol, then consider what the pump and actuator must do when the operator releases the control.
Read the connections, not the label
A closed center blocks the main ports in the neutral symbol. A tandem center commonly connects P to T while blocking A and B; a float center commonly connects A and B to T while blocking P. Open-center arrangements vary, so confirm the actual drawing. Names alone are an unreliable purchase specification.
Match the pump circuit
A fixed-displacement pump needs an appropriate path for its delivery when motion stops. Blocking that delivery can send flow across the relief and produce heat. A pressure-compensated pump behaves differently, but its control arrangement must still be compatible with the selected center.
Separate stopping from holding
A blocked spool symbol does not promise zero leakage or safe support of a suspended load. Identify any dedicated holding device independently. During design review, trace the neutral path and each powered path, including pilot supply and return restrictions.
Practical checklist
- Attach the required center-position symbol to the order.
- State fixed or variable pump type and unloading arrangement.
- Define the required actuator behavior after power loss.
